How to Assess Fresh Squid
Product assessment should consider temperature history, odor, appearance, texture, and documentation. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, seafood should smell fresh and mild rather than sour, rancid, fishy, or ammonia-like. Raw squid should generally appear moist and shiny, while the flesh should have a firm texture appropriate to the species and product form.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:
Fish should smell fresh and mild, not fishy, sour, or ammonia-like. A fish’s eyes should be clear and shiny.
Color alone is not sufficient to confirm freshness. Buyers should also verify production and freezing dates, storage temperature, glazing, package condition, lot identification, and cold-chain records. Frozen packs should not arrive open, damaged, excessively dehydrated, or covered with unusual amounts of loose ice that may indicate poor temperature control.

Processing, Packaging, and Quality Control
Effective quality control begins with raw-material inspection and continues through cleaning, grading, freezing, packing, cold storage, and loading. Product specifications should define acceptable size, appearance, odor, foreign matter, glaze, net weight, temperature, microbiological criteria where required, and labeling details.
Iran Fish states that its seafood processing follows HACCP and ISO food-safety standards and that IQF technology is used for selected products. Buyers who require certified facilities or shipment-specific documentation should request current certificates and verify their scope, issuing body, facility name, validity period, and applicability to the ordered squid product.
Export packaging may include food-grade inner liners or bags and durable outer cartons suitable for cold-chain transportation. Label content should be agreed before production and may include the product name, scientific name, origin, production date, expiry date, lot number, net weight, storage temperature, processor or exporter information, and destination-specific markings. Private-label packaging is subject to order volume, artwork approval, and regulatory requirements.
